Sunscreen

-Be careful whose advice you buy, but be patient with those who supply it. Advice is a form of nostalgia - sharing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping off the ugly parts, and recycling it for more than it's worth.

Listening to LOTR, deciding to vent

I came to a revelation tonight, while I was attending a pretty extraordinary get-together. And while the event itself was centred around recycling, sustainability, and the incredibly sad state of the consumerist world, it somehow dawned on me that the need for self-expression and recollection is far greater than I have made it out to be in the past. I don't know why this thought came to me at this time, but regardless, I have now made a deal with myself to start writing and publishing my thoughts - nothing formal, just writing when I feel the need.

I had tried to start a blog in the past, but I could never grasp a subject well enough to feel the need or summon the confidence to actually go through with it. I think I am a pretty smart guy, though I'm not really an expert in anything that relevant, or in anything that people would care about, aside from some die-hard basketball fans who I doubt would ever stumble upon my blog. But I realized today that blogs aren't about profiting or generating hits, likes, friends, or followers - though those seem to be the most sought-after things in the world today. If you find a way to profit from writing your own opinions or findings, then good on you, but at this point in my life, there is no subject which leaves me in a position to comment on and thereby profit from. I'm much more of a conversation based teacher and student.

The name of tonight's event escapes me, though for my future self, who will undoubtedly be the only one reading this, it was that weird event in East Van that you went with Simon with, were completely overdressed based on the other attendees, and watched some thought-provoking, and hopefully ultimately life-altering films. I feel like it left a mark on me, and I hope that in the future when I read this, that I can look back and remember this night as one of significance and change.

Lofty goals have never been my bag, though here are a few subtle ones to start me off slowly and hopefully surely:

- I am going to read the local news every day from here on out.
- I am going to bring a refillable water bottle every day to work (DRINK MORE WATER DAMNIT)
- I am going to bring a refillable coffee cup to stop being such a Starbucks prick (what happened there?)
- I am going to consume for less plastic and non-recyclables, and ONLY RECYCLE THOSE THAT CAN BE RECYCLED (don't throw it out)


That's a good start. I really hope that I continue blogging, who knows if it will happen (I probably should have included that as one of my goals - hell lets include it). To my future self, hold true to these goals, and start to become more of an adult. Go into every situation prepared, knowing what you want to get out of it. Be confident in yourself, as you have much to give and much to be proud of.
